You know you have the final say right? How many of you feel like you're addicted to sugar? I know that I was at one point in my life. Soda instead of water, snacks everyday, starchy/fried foods primarily, etc etc. It wasn't easy but I fought my way out of the Sugar Hole and left the Honey Bun binge in the past lol. Although it's nothing to be ashamed of, it isn't always easy to speak about our sugar addictions. Most people think that they have it under control until they realize that they've eaten some sort of sweets for 23 straight days saying to themselves..."Oh, a little won't hurt!"
Instead of focusing on what you can't have, place your energy into supplying your body with the nutrients to help fight those cravings. Because let me tell you, the food tastes great for the 15 minutes that you're eating it but then what? What are you left with? Guilt, bloat, gas, who knows! Learn to say NO until you have regained your gift of discernment and ability to foresee the effects of your actions. As mentioned, nutrients provide the foundation for a healthy life. Notice I didn't say CALORIES, I said NUTRIENTS. Just try to keep that in mind before your snacks or meals. Here are some of the tips and tricks that I use once I feel my control slipping away.
Do you ever get a sudden sweet tooth in the midst of a stressful situation? Well you can thank the increase of cortisol levels for that. It's at that moment you begin to reach for the most sugary, high calorie snack around right? Wrong! Get up, take a walk outdoors under the sun if you can. Both sugar and sunshine help to release serotonin...you know, that FEEL GOOD hormone that makes everything feel better. At least Vitamin D won't won't leaving you feel guilty like junk food tends to do. A quick 5 minute walk will definitely give you an advantage over those "AB Preventing" cravings. So if you feel the stress piling on, try to give yourself a moment to yourself and get outdoors. Don't worry, if the sun is not shining there are other options as well.
Did you know that Fermented Foods and Drinks help to curb sugar cravings? Additionally, the healthy bacteria found in them will actually seek out and EAT any excess sugar you may have consumed. This does wonders for your health because it decreases the negative effects of the sugar you just ate. So try having a Kombucha after your snacks until you no longer succumb to the cravings. Hell, take that Kombucha, and a cup of yogurt, with you on your outdoor stroll under the sun for an even stronger fight against sugar!
Not into bacteria or sun? That's okay. Maybe a cup of tea will tickle your fancy? I, for one, am a HUGE fan of hot steeped tea. Peppermint, Dandelion and Lavender tend to be my go-to teas but if I feel an urge to eat one of my daughter's lunch snacks, I'll grab a cup of peppermint tea to help suppress my appetite. I love it without any additives, but feel free to add a bit of honey or lemon if you like.
We are all working towards becoming healthier overall. If sugar is a constant battle for you, just know that you aren't alone. No one expects you to have the discipline level of a robot. We are human and we give in sometimes, but we also have the ability to set ourselves up for success if we truly want it. Try my suggestions if you like. You don't have to feel "trapped" in an unhealthy spiral of habits. You can make the choice to live a healthier lifestyle today. Every action starts with a thought so if you set your thoughts up for success, you set yourself up for success! Now go get that peppermint tea with a side of sauerkraut and eat it outside lol!!
